My good friend leant me this book, Girl, Woman, Other, and I have just finished it.  This is a book which has been receiving a great deal of attention and I understand why, it is very well crafted and full of interesting, likeable characters offering an insight into female lives, feminism and cultural identity among other themes.

We have been busy learning a new craft this summer in the Life of Ryrie. As it has been almost six months since T attended actual school and J has been properly finished since mid-July I figured a little challenge, just like a new blog post, might be rather timely…

Am Reading – but maybe a tiny bit weeping too. Such a beautiful book.  Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano takes through a roller coaster of emotions and is one of the best books I have read for a while. Love it. 

Running not walking

I have a funny story to tell you. At the old-enough-to-know-better age of 43, I have sustained a running injury.  Actually, that’s not the funny bit.  The funny part is that I have started running.  

How hard can that be?

“What shall we do whilst J & Daddy are away on football tour T?”

“Well… I’d really like to make a quilt.”

“Oh.”

This was one of those conversations that, as soon as they reach their eventual and somewhat ambulatory conclusion, you wonder where the hell it came from.

This is also one of those moments where I find myself thinking, “meh, quilting? how hard can that be?!?!?”

Tom Hanks. If you don’t love him already then by the end of his collection of short stories, Uncommon Type, you definitely will! Each story is perfect to read in about 15 -20 minutes which means you get to enjoy delving into a slice of literary Americana in the same amount of time it takes for your kid’s attention span to lapse.

Little Bear’s Space Adventures

Ah, English Summer Fetes. What a beautifully eclectic variety of weekend entertainment. From the gently frustrating Hook-a-Duck, the aggression venting Splat-the-Rat, the pocket fleecing raffle (none of the prizes you actually want to win but you still buy a mass of tickets anyway) and the Teddy Bear Rocket Launcher. All the old favourites. But, wait, what was that? Teddy Bear Rocket launcher??? Yes. Yes, my friends, you read that correctly. There is a new stall in the village (well the neighbouring one to be precise) where your child’s teddy gets the opportunity of a lifetime – to become an astronaut. Yes. I know.

Five Little Ducks

Have you ever wondered what happened to the five little ducks who went swimming one day, over the hill and far away? Or even how that Mummy duck felt when finally only one little duck came back? No. I haven’t either. Until now that is. I now know that two of those goddamn little ducks ended up in our garage. 

Am Reading

Greta Thunberg. What a remarkable young lady. She puts us all to shame and this collection of the speeches she has made over the last 18 months makes for uncomfortable reading for many reasons.
